If you're willing to spend quite a bit of time getting the tangles out, get a mat splitter. . . go slowly or you will break more of the hair. If at all possible, see a professional dog groomer. You may pay more, but the results will be worth it. Remember, when the Shih Tzu's hair is wet the tangles are HARDER to comb out, than when dry. Good luck!

hair conditioner (the human good stuff :)), on dry hair add a small bit of water, a teaspoon. Rub the mat around with your fingers so the conditioner gets to the tangles of the matt. then take a brush and work fron the end of the hair up. once you have them all out give him/her a normal bath to get the conditioner out.

I am a dog groomer.Take a pretty sharp pair or scissors and start at the skin where the matt meets it and splice it in the middle a couple of times without cutting the skin.Then you take a brush(slicker brush)and usually it brushes out .It is time consuming,that is why I recommend you take it to a good groomer!

ok i have owned two of those dogs adoreable arnt they i bought a mat spliter and a mat rake these can be purchased at a pet shop now the spliter will cut the mated fur but you cut it like you comb it so you make it in smaller sections after this you use the rake but be gental this takes time and patience, and will be painfull for the dog if not done properly you may ask the owener of the pet shop for instructions and sugestions on the use of these groming tools.and no you dont use a slicker brush a pin brush is beter a slicker bursh will pull the dogs hair as it is for poodles and short haired dogs.the method i told you about is to keep the hair as long as posssable while still geting out the mats dont do this all at one siting if there are a lot of mats but once you get them out they are easer with every day grooming to keep out.

Check into spray-on detangler. Make sure none of the chemicals are harmful to your pooch, and get the kind for kids (I think Johnson %26amp; Johnson makes a "baby" detangler).
