It would probably be best for you to find a different hair stylist and get your layers cut in--but if you insist on doing it yourself--remember if you elevate your hair at any degree and cut it, you'll have a layer--it just depends on how drastic you want them--More drastic: section the hair you want layered off, hold it straight up and cut straight across. You'll have to cut at least on inch off to really notice it (...sure hope you have a steady hand :))--it won't be fancy but it'll be layered....

Less drastic you can pull your straight out at a 90 degree angle from the side of your head and cut down--it'll have you in a strange postion, but it'll do the job...I wish I could send you a demo video or something, but I don't think they have stuff like that floating aroung the interweb :(

I'm sorry you got a crappy haircut and I'm really hopin you get somebody else to do it, but if not I hope I helped a little...

Please don't do it by yourself. A layered haircut is something that you have to be TRAINED to do. You can't do it on your own or you will look horrible. Try going to a different stylist at a better salon and they should get it right, but don't EVER do it by yourself.

its pretty difficult to give yourself layers

if you want to fix your bangs, theres a trick where you twist them and cut, but that will give you an extremely straight cut. if you want side bangs, try moving scissors down a section of hair, maybe cutting a little each time. it'll give you layered bangs, but be careful not to go too short becasue its really easy to do that.

for the rest of your hair, i suggest taking scissors and cutting upwards paralell to your hair instead of straight cut. do it multiple times and it'll look layered

believe me, you dont want to do it yourself. i tried cutting my side bangs so that they were angled (i tried trimming them) and i screwed up. it is a lot harder than it looks.

Let your bangs grow out first. Then if you know what shape you want, that is also right for your face and style, go for it. Cut your hair when its slightly towel dried so that you can have soft edges and see your curls so you don't mess up. Part your hair the way you want it all the time so that it won't look weird later. Make sure you use many mirrors to make sure the shape is even. Section your hair by starting with the top layer of hair and work your way under. Don't cut drastically. Never blow dry unless your looking to turn your hair into a bush.

If you do cut your hair make sure you can maintain it and style it easily.

its never a good idea to cut your own hair take it from me, you could be very sorry and a pain waiting for it to grow back. no one can cut their own hair properly can you imagine trying to cut the back?go to another hairdresser and explain clearly what you want, i know will cost you more money but believe me worth it in the end, been there done that and cried for a year!!please do not attempt to do it yourself

What I would try doing is taking the top "layer" of your hair (top half of your hair) and cut it about an inch shorter.

If you want more of a chunky/clippy look then hold the scissors so they go straight up while holding the "top layer" of your hair. By doing this it will make it look more natural not like you cut it straight across. When you cut it this way make sure to hold your fingers above where you want it cut (not at top) more near the ends of hair.

To make it frame your face hold the top layer of hair ,same way I mentioned, and round it more.

OR you could leave your hair down when your done with the actual layering and take the pieces that you want to use for framing and angle your fingers so the tips of your fingers are pointing up,

(Example below)

kinda like that. And snip the hair. REMEMBER use the scissors so they go upward and use the point of scissors and cut, not side of scissors.

Hope this helps :)
