can anyone tell me how to cut long hair??
my daughter has long hair and so do I but I dont like hair-dressers/salons after having all my hair cut off when I was a teenager and it looking nothing like the style i wanted!!!
But we both have split ends and it really needs cutting. Does anyone know of any sites on how to cut hair? I only want to know how to cut long hair into a basic cut nothing fancy (we both dont have a fringe and we dont want one either)

The site has simple instructions for trimming your own hair, but they'd be easily adapted to do your daughter's too. I've started using this method regularly and it's great - I'm trying to grow my hair past my waist and hairdressers always want to cut several inches off!
I agree with the post that said buy scissors specially for hair (and keep them only for hair, otherwise they'll get blunt). Blunt scissors can do far more harm than good when cutting your hair.

Find a style you like in a magazine and take that to the hairdressers

If you go to the salon and simply ask for a trim, that will help get rid of your split ends... If you are looking to repair your hair on your own, try the 3 minute leave in conditioner from Aussie. It will repair your ends slowly. It worked for me!

Split ends mean a trim, so if you go to the salon they only trim an inch off.
If you want to try doing it at home, take a scissor and grab the hair between your middle and index fingers (Dont grab too much only a little bit)
Grab only an inch though no more and cut it.
Then keep doing it until you have eveness in your hair.
Also you can just tie it in a ponytail and cut it....
I don't think this'll help...

Get a picture from a magazine with the hairstyle you like. From a celebrity, from a model, whatever. Tell your hairdresser the exact measures, like how many inches you want cut off.

try changing hairdressers and ask for just a trim.

It's so easy to do at home.
Identify how far up from the bottom of your longest hair the split ends stop. You want to trim off as many as possible. If your hair's really long, you won't even miss 4 inches, which is usually enough.
The biggie is to buy a pair of really good scissors made for hair cutting, and to use them for nothing else.
Wet the hair, comb it out so it's all down your back, and trim, starting at the center. Decide whether you want the ends to be straight across or curves in a U. Make sure the sides are even by pulling them forward, in front of your body, and seeing if the ends line up.
This time of year, cut hair outside and you don't even have to sweep up.

I have extremely long hair, and honestly I would suggest going to a local hair cuttery and asking to just have it trimmed. Show them how much you want trimmed and make sure they only cut that amount. You have to be firm with them because some people can become scissor happy when they see long hair. If they tell you she has a lot of split ends so they'll have to cut a lot just tell them no. Split ends can be cut on a gradual basis and it is not necessary to cut them all off at one time. Do the styling at home.

Its hard to tell what you are looking for when you say basic haircut, but I am assuming that you do not want any layers. I ran a search for a 0 degree hair cut and found this:

This hair cut has no layers. Its just a solid form. It seems basic, but I found it harder to learn this haircut, than any other with layers because if you mess up just a little, it carries through the whole haircut, and there are no layers to hide this mistakes. Most people leave one side a little longer than the other.
There are other hair cuts with layers... depending on what you are looking for, you could try one of those.
Good luck!

I strongly recommend that you DO NOT cut your hair yourself.
I know how you feel about hairdressers, but you just have to build a trust with them, and most will refund you if you are not happy.
Your split ends are a sign of your hair needing to be cut. I find the most reputable hair dressers are the independant ones that come to your house or you go to theirs as they do not have as many customers as at a salon and therefore you get to spend more time with your hair stylist. Look in the yellow pages, and just have a chat with one of them!
