Suppose you walk in the barber or salon and a random person is selected to cut your hair. Should you be quiet and let them cut your hair, so they don't lop an ear off, or should you engage in small talk to break the awkward silence? Should this be different with someone who cuts your hair on a regular basis? What is the proper etiquette?
How much small talk(if any) is appropriate when someone is cutting your hair?
I've been in this type of situation before. I go to this small salon near my house and even though the same girl cuts my hair, I don't feel obligated to chat it up the entire time. I'm friendly and we chat back and forth and ask each other questions, but for the most part, I just let her do her job and don't bug her with small talk. I think it depends on the stylist too, some of them are very chatty and love talking to you, and some aren't. I don't think it's rude to be silent. It may be a bit more awkward, but that's about it.

If it is someone new cutting your hair, then you should make small talk about your lifestyle, needs, etc so they can have a little insight into if you are a high maintenance person or someone that just likes to "Wash and go".
If it is your regular stylist, then they should already know you and unless you feel the need to talk, just close your eyes and let them do their thing.

If its someone that cuts your hair on a regular basis then I say why not engage in small talk. and If it makes you uncomfortable then just keep it very on the surface... but if its a random person cutting your hair. you can use your disgression as to wether or not you want to make small talk. if not just read a magazine or be quiet. but usually they will iniciate it. it shouldnt be awkward. its not a big deal. I dont think they mind if the customer talks to them or not.. lol

I like to tell them where I like to dump the bodies. I always get a great haircut and don't even have to leave a tip.

You're the paying customer, so whatever you decide. None at all as long as you're still polite. A good hairdresser will respond in kind.

I personally feel uncomfortable when stylists want to gab. They don't know me, I don't know them, and to act like we know each other is fake. I'd rather have the time to relax and read a magazine.
With my manicurist, its different. I see her every other week for an hour at a time and we have gotten to know each other, so with her, the conversation is pleasant. But with random hairstylists, facialists, etc, I prefer things quiet.

I always chat with the person cutting my hair. It's too awkward to be silent. A hair stylist is your best friend for that 15 minutes!

I prefer not to chat. Let them do their thing.
